Creative Non-Fiction
flash fiction, short story, memoir

My creative non-fiction focuses largely on memoir-inspired pieces about assisted reproduction, solo motherhood, and infertility/fertility. My latest book Cyborg Conception combines memoir writing and research on the phenomenon of solo motherhood by choice. My most recent publication is called Pen Sketch and about my own experience of reading a letter (called a pen sketch) scribed by the sperm donor of my twins.

'Pen Sketch' is written as if to the donor himself and connects with themes of class and gender and not only offers a personal narrative but reflects on the changing nature of family construction and the complicated relationship between donor and parent. It is also an exploration of small town, English life and the importance of storytelling.

'Balloon' is a flash piece which details the immediate moments after giving birth prematurely. When my twins were taken to the NICU, I found myself alone in a room filed with the grief of loss, highlighted by a congratulations balloon that I ultimately ask to be removed

'i think he killed his wife' details my experience as a homebound new mother, observing the world outside through my living room window. In the story, I spend my days watching the strange behaviour of my neighbour. Over several days, I become increasingly obsessed with him, convinced that something is wrong. The story explores themes of perception, mental health, and the uncertainty between what is seen and what is imagined.
